1. Как зародилась ваша группа?

Группа сформировалась благодаря Jarred Shane (так его тогда звали) и Danny Axe (Sergio Cardenas). Они были в группе под названием Hot Boxx. Они покинули ot Boxx и сформировали LUST. Потом они заманили к себе бассиста Mark Young (сейчас его зовут вроде Mawk или Mcud, я прав?) и барабанщика Eric Hurwit. Они почувствовали, что им нужен гитарист играющий в тяжёлом резком стиле. Я откликнулся на их объявление, послал им свою демку и попал на прослушивание. Я поиграл с ними и улучшил несколько частей на лету и они попросили меня остаться..

2. Откуда появилось ваше имя Live Urban Sexx Tribe?

Эмм Jarred или Danny придумал это название, но оно было просто Urban Sex Tribe. Но так как мы в основном выступали “live”, Jarred добавил “Live” и ещё один “X” в слове Sexx, и следовательно получился акроним: LUST

3. Играл лы ты ещё в какой-либо группе до этого?

Да, я был в разных группах в Нью-Джерси и Массачусеттсе. Я изъездил всё восточное побережье и после того как закончил колледж, я переехал в Лос-Анджелес, чтобы поступить в Музыкальный Институт учиться на гитариста. Два года спустя я присоединился к LUST.

4. Слышал ли ты какие-нибудь песни группы Джареда Hotboxx?

Мы играли каверы на Rage against the machine, Parliament, Faith no More, различные металл-группы и фанк-группы. Но мы никогда с ними не выступали, насколько я помню.

6. Как происходил процесс написания музыки? Кто это делал? Откуда вы черпали вдохновение?

Jarred писал все тексты. Иногда мы помогали, когда он просил придумат слова для рифмы или подкинуть какие-нибудь идеи. 7. Есть ли у тебя какие-либо истории из ваших туров?

Было много всякого, но если я начну рассказывать я сразу же получу не один раздражённый звонок, хаха. Просто могу сказать, что было много секса, алкоголя и рок-н-ролла. Мы никогда не употребляли наркотики, кроме травки. Её курили трое из нас… Включая меня. Lemmy из Motorhead приходил на многие наши выступления. Он играл в пинбол или видео-игры за сценой, бухал и у него был плохой запах из рта. Но мы его любили!

8. Сложно ли было работать в коллективе?

В добрые времена было просто замечательно. Настоящая магия. Мы вместе тусовались и работали. Но когда мы подписались с лейблом, всё разрушилось. Было много внутренних противоречий. Принимались неправильные решения, было горько. Было некрасиво.

9. Сколько просуществовала группы, как получилось, что вы распались?

Я думаю что мы были вместе около 4-х лет. Мы получили рабочее предложение от Warner Bros с помощью Brian Christian, который продюсировал Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper и многих других артистов. О также работал над песней the Wall группы Pink Floyd. Brian провёл 3 месяца с нами на репетициях создавая из нас отлаженную машину. У нас было несколько выступлений и представили разные новые песни, например, “Suicide” и “Another Day”. Мы превратились из хороших в великолепных. Лучше нас никого не было на горизонте. Мы записали нашу пластинку с Brian за несколько месяцев в Westlake studios в Голливуде (Halen, Janet Jackson, U2,все они там записывались). Но мы были слишком наивными и ничего не понимали в контрактах, наш менеджер был неопытный, он был DJ группы KNAC. И Jarred принял несколько плохих решений, что привело к большим проблемам процесса подписи с звукозаписывающей компанией. Он думал, что Warner Bros пытались нас обломать, но на самом деле нам нужен был просто профессиональный менеджер. После того как Jarred разорвал рабочее предложение от Warner Bros и Brian Christian не сказав нам об этом — это было начало конца.

Мы так и не получили копию нашей записи. Мы были обладателями музыки, но не мастер-записями. Однако, спасибо тебе Roel, мы восстановили 6 песен с альбома спустя 16 лет. Так или иначе, возвращаясь к истории, Jarred разорвал партнёрские отношения с Brian Christian и Warner Bros. В то время у нас на разогреве играла группа под названием Liquid Tree. Хорошие парни и неплохие музыканты, но по таланту они даже и рядом не были с LUST. Тем не менее, Jarred вместе с Mark’ом в секрете от всех сформировали новую группу с тремя парнями из Liquid Tree и в общем-то бросили LUST в один миг. Так на свет появились Hed PE. Не хочу никого обидеть из группы HED, но в глубине души Jarred знает, что LUST были бы гораздо более успешной группой. Все кто был на концертах обеих коллективов согласится со мной. Наверное Jarred почуял застой и устал от всех проблем с LUST и хотел перемен. Но это решение повлияло на всю нашу жизнь, потому что мы были в одном шаге от успеха. И если бы мы выпусили альбом вместе с Warner Bros, он мог бы потом сформировать Hed и они бы были гораздо популярней. И у всех нас было бы гораздо больше возможностей играть в знаменитых группах. Но молодые годы несут в себе неопытность и ошибки. И мы в LUST наступили на все грабли какие только могли.

10. Ты ещё общаешься с кем-нибудь из группы?

Да, я до сих пор поддерживаю контакт с Danny и недавно опять связался с Eric’ом. С Jarred’ом и Mark’ом я не разговаривал давным-давно. У них своё занятие — HedPE. У нас было много обиды и вражды друг к другу. Не то чтобы я до сих пор таю обиду на них, но мне очень жаль, что мы столько сил положили на то чтобы стать успешной группой, а Jarred просто выкинул всё это на помойку, хотя нам оставалось совсем немного.

11. Чем ты сейчас занимаешься? Играешь ли до сих пор музыку, играл ли песни LUST?

Да, я сейчас играю в группе Siris и очень много делаю записей для разных артистов от рока до хип-хопа. До сих пор помню как играть все мои партии из LUST. Даже соло, ха-ха-ха. Как только я слышу песню, я сразу всё вспоминаю, это как на велосипеде ездить.

12. Следил ли ты за карьерой (hed)p.e. все эти годы?

Да не особо. Я немножно слушал их музыку, как старые песни, так и новые. Новые песни довольно неплохие. Но ни в одной из них нету того, что было в LUST. Без обид, но это правда. Музыкальный калибр музыкантов из LUST в сто раз больше любого из HedPE, кроме Mark’а. Он был невероятно хорошим бассистом в LUST. И Eric (барабанщик LUST), сдаюсь: он лучший барабанщик с которым я когда я либо играл, а я играл с очень хорошими. Не так много барабанщиков может сравниться с ним. И мне кажется я гораздо более хороший гитарист чем любой из гитаристов Hed. Danny Axe был наиболее фанковый и писал более задорные, запоминающиеся рифы, чем кто либо

13. Настоящий возраст Jared’а никому не известен, не знаешь сколько ему?

Я знаю сколько ему лет, но я не буду раскрывать его секрет, ха-ха. Это такой бизнес, где твой образ и молодость играют не последнюю роль. У него своя группа и я не хочу создавать ему какие-либо проблемы. Это не смотря на то, что я считаю его эгоистичным шутом. Давай я просто скажу так: он очень хорошо выглядит для своего возраста и во времена LUST не было сотовых телефонов.

14. Есть ли какие-либо планы для LUST? Ты говорил мне, что хочешь залить ваши песни на iTunes, стоит ли нам ждать чего-то нового?

Ага, не смотря на то что мы с Jarred’ом не особо ладим, он всё ещё является частью этих песен. Так что деньги вырученные с продаж песен LUST должны быть поделены между всеми пятью участниками. Я сейчас пытаюсь с ним связатся и с Марком с новостью, что альбом LUST будет выпущен и они обладают на него правами как основные участники. Eric и Danny уже в курсе. Если появится возможность сделать тур, я бы без проблем на него согласился, хотя вряд ли Jarred и Mark согласятся в связи с занятостью в Hed. Но может быть мы можем найти им замену. Danny и Eric не растеряли свой талант и готовы к выступлениям. Сначала нужно выяснить если кому-то это будет интересно, наша музыка уже немного устарела, ха-ха-ха.

15. Ты раньше мне упоминал, что возможно есть записи с ваших выступлений, которые наконец увидят свет?

Есть несколько человек у которых есть запись с выступлений в Troubadour. Я к ним приставал с просьбой поискать на чердаке эти кассеты. Надеюсь однажды они найдут их. Если наша музыка будет продаваться на iTunes и у нас появится новая, у меня есть предчувствие, что всё это воссоединится.

The Lost Soul: Your first label Jive Records proved to be a disappointment while your follow-up label deal with Koch didn’t prove to be much better.

How does it feel to finally have a home at Suburban Noize Records where people actually get what your trying todo? and there not tellin you to change your lyrics either ahaha)

Well, everything happens for a reason. Even though Jive was not a dream come true, it still did a good job in some ways. I have myself to blame for alot of things as well. I was definitely doing too much drugs and I had not yet become a real man.

Koch actually was much better than Jive in the way that I had grown up and Koch was the beginning of me taking control of my art and career. Only In Amerika has turned out to be a classic hedpe album and sold a lot of albums with that one.Suburban Noize obviously has been the best fit so far. But all situations provided me the sort of education I needed at the time.

Do you think you underestimate how many old school fans are at hed p.e. shows?

I think you might over estimate how many old school fans are at the shows! ha!

Truth be told, I see more new school fans out there than anything else. Thats a fact. You can just tell by the overwhelming presence of young people in the crowd.

After you get done with your current tour do you plan on focusing on your next album?

Yes, definitely. We will be touring with ICP until christmas, and after that we will begin work on the new album, which will be titled: 2010: TRUTH RISING

Whats the word on the here and now music video premiere?

Its ready to go. Any day now you will be able to see that. It looks great. We filmed it in New York and I love it.

Any word on the D.i.Y. Guys 2nd DVD?

I hope late next year. With the success of NWO, we have been so busy. I havent been able to concentrate on DIY, Episode two. But the first one has sold many times what the label thought it would. Very happy with that.

I know you guys have been touring a shitload… What do you do to pass time on the road and do you have any crazy/funny stories you would care to share?

I have been running and lifting weights alot. Reading. A guy lost the tip of his finger in one of our pits. Someone shit their pants in one of our pits. Gross!!!

Your out touring with ICP right now on the bang pow boom tour… How is that going so far? Are the kids fucking shit up in the pit?

Our clown pits are insane, and this is the greatest tour ever!!! Since I am a Juggalo it is an honor to tour with the wicket clowns. The crowds are amazing, and this is something everyone has got to see to believe.

What have you been listening to lately music wise?

I have been listening to the Bang Pow Boom CD, it fucking rules. The new JayZ is the bomb. I have been listening to alot of Brazillian music, and of course I keep in touch with old school punk like Minor Threat and Suicidal and The Clash.

How does it feel looking back on when you first started making music and lookin at where it has gotten you now?

It feels great. I feel so blessed to have a band that gets along like a family. This version of hedpe is really carrying a high vibration, and I wouldnt change a thing. 2009 was the best year we have ever had. I feel so fucking blessed. Its like living a dream for sure.

The Gauntlet: Tonight’s the first night of the tour? How is Colorado working out for you?

Jared: It is great. It is great to be out here. Denver has a massive underground network. There is this massive underground family in Colorado.

The Gauntlet: Always good to start out a tour where you are loved.

Jared: Oh yeah, we got love. Even when the numbers aren’t huge, it is still love, right? As artists, we tell ourselves numbers don’t matter. Sometimes it is hard to get on stage when there aren’t many bodies on the floor, but that is when you see what you are made of.

The Gauntlet: So you guys mostly have west coast tour dates right?

Jared: Yeah, I am not sure of the routing but I think that is what I saw. This has been a great year for us, just a lot of constant love.

The Gauntlet: You are very positive in your mindset right now. I am sort of shocked having listened to the latest Hed pe album New World Orphans.

Jared: I hope it is not a bleak message; I don’t want to invalidate your opinion though. The album is there to point out some much needed knowledge. We are going to win. We will win against these dark forces. With the next album, we will concentrate on the solutions. That type of comment has been bothering me lately. When you are a student of this esoteric wisdom, you have to move through that shadow. There is a lot of information that is daunting. Once you have the information, you can move on to the solutions.

The Gauntlet: In all fairness, the album was written and recorded in a different era.

Jared: You are right, the album was done in June of 2008. My perspective is so different now, so different. At that time, I was just like we need to drop a bomb on Washington as it was hopeless. I came to the realization that is what they want you to think. They don’t want you to have any hope. The fact that Obama even got elected just flies in the face of everything as far as I’m concerned. The fact that millions now have love and hope in their hearts; that just goes beyond Obama. That is more than he can even accomplish in office. There was a time I was saying some pretty disgusting things about Obama from the stage. It isn’t like here comes another black guy that loves Obama. Then there were some things that caught my attention. I feel like I was a part of a mass movement of love.

The Gauntlet: I’d like to see a little less talk and see some action.

Jared: He is one guy that came into a very corrupt and cancerous system. People shouldn’t expect so much from him. He was the best of the choices. If McCain and Palin won, we’d be involved in even more wars. I believe in the power of thought. Every thought effects reality. He got millions of people thinking good thoughts, hopeful thoughts, loving thoughts. All of that goes out into the ethers and effects reality.

The Gauntlet: For me, the jury is out on him. I don’t like the fact that he went to last year’s Bildenberg meeting. That shows me he is one of them, looking out for his own power and wealth.

Jared: You gotta realize this. The same way the dark forces have infiltrated all the good organizations, we need to infiltrate them. People need to think with a little more complexity. If all these organizations are dark, we need to infiltrate them?

The Gauntlet: How can one be sure that was Obama’s intentions are good?

Jared: How can we be sure about anything? We need to understand this spy vs. spy thing. It is a back and forth infiltration. I am just done with all the bullshit. I am at the center of my being and I want to keep hope alive. We can take the power back; we have the power to do that.

The Gauntlet: It seems like we have almost made a 180 from where we were a few months ago.

Jared: That statement in itself says it all. You have to keep all those feelings. They want us to be caught up in survival mode. We have to be careful where we place our thoughts. If you are only thinking of bad shit, that empowers the bad shit.

The Gauntlet: Hed pe has always added a taste of social issues to its’ songs.

Jared: Early Hed pe, I was heavily on drugs. The albums were a lot about smoking weed and fucking bitches mixed with a bit of social commentary. It was a progression from 9/11. It woke up a lot of us. Maybe we should thank the people who did it because millions of people had to wake up to what the planetary situation was. 9/11 was the catalyst.

The Gauntlet: It changed everyone’s life whether you were affected by it directly or not.

Jared: At first I was like ‘go get em’. Then I was like there seems like a conspiracy that went on.

The Gauntlet: A lot of people looking back see that there was something else to what we were told, when did it click for you?

Jared: I think about a year after it happened. I saw the project for the new American century website that we needed to rally the troops before sending them to the Middle East. That blew me away. Then obviously no plane went into the pentagon. Someone handed me a DVD, I think it was called In Plain Site. Steel towers don’t fall from jet fuel and fall into their own footprints. These scientific conclusions came into my brain. There were a lot of people pointing me into the right direction.

The Gauntlet: That was 2002, it is now 2009. Why wasn’t there this Hed pe revolution earlier?

Jared: You can hear in the first album on Suburban Noise Records Back 2 Base X things started going that way. With this last album, New World Orphans the focus became really sharp.

The Gauntlet: It sounds like the shit just hit the fan on the new album. You are angry on the album.

Jared: Sure, that is just rage. That is probably the point where I was at. I never wanted to convey a message of giving up, but it was defiantly 2 minutes to midnight. People needed to wake the fuck up. They needed to be provided with certain bits of knowledge which was my intention.

The Gauntlet: Are fans embracing the message?

Jared: We are a part of that movement now; that truth movement. We have a tidal wave of support.

The Gauntlet: What you are out there preaching is labeled by the media as conspiracy theory.

Jared: They do that with everything. That is the way they turn things. The mainstream media is by and large owned by those who want to enslave us. It is in their best interest to make fun of those things that they are afraid of: whether it is UFO’s, lost history, or secret governments. You should really look into those things that they make fun of.

The Gauntlet: Will the next album be more of a solution?

Jared: I don’t want to be part of the problem. What I discovered is a lot of people who are into this type of knowledge, you have to move from that shadow of information and into the next point which is how do we bring them down. This is the love vibration. That will take all their power away. Rage on the frontlines is still rage regardless of what side it is on. It still fuels the darkness.

The Gauntlet: You wrote and recorded this album in June of last year, in November, there was a positive change for you. Is it now hard for you to sing these songs as they are no longer where you are at?

Jared: Sometimes I have to adjust my lyrics. It is not that difficult though. It is more difficult to get up and sing about a dirty sex song than to revisit a political idea.

The Gauntlet: Is it difficult to sing songs from the first two albums then?

Jared: Yes, but that is just because my musical tastes are so different. We also haven’t had those guitar players in the band for 10 years. I’m not even into some of that trippy stuff anymore. I am more into that hardcore punk vibe now. I am more into the style of our new guitar player. I thought of taking some of those old songs and making them more his style. I won’t do it though. If you come to our shows now, it isn’t a bunch of fans from the 90’s, it is a bunch of newer fans. The 90’s fans make up such a small part of our market.

The Gauntlet: I like hearing the new stuff, but love the nostalgia.

Jared: Sure, you are summing it up though. It brings back memories for you. You feel that old vibration and you are transported and I do respect that. But I have to respect my artistic integrity and where my heart is at. I feel like I am fulfilling a purpose and I have to respect my fans. We do play the old shit and I do respect my old fans. There are some songs that people want to hear, like “Swan Dive.” I am not going to play that song. I don’t like it. It speaks of a time when I was not empowered and suicidal. I am not going to revisit that vibe. It is personal.

The Gauntlet: They have the CD, they can listen to it there.

Jared: [laughs]

The Gauntlet: Are you happy with the lineup?

Jared: Oh, am I ever. Things are going great. Everything is great right now, not just with the band.

The Gauntlet: You do seem like you are in a good place.

Jared: It is not just today; it is just where I am.

The Gauntlet: You aren’t back on drugs are you? No happy pills?

Jared: No, as a matter of fact, I haven’t even smoked weed in 25 days. I have smoked weed longer than most people have been alive. It is not like I am missing out on anything. I am a stoner. When I smoke weed I over do it. I wake up and don’t stop till I go to sleep. Where does it all end? There was a voice in my head that said it was time to take a break. I don’t like the word quit. As for right now, I am not going to be smoking. I stopped smoking cold turkey, but to say I will never do it again, that is predicting the future. How many people’s predictions never come to pass? I am just living in the moment and in the moment I am not smoking. I am not going to smoke this whole tour and this is a 3 week tour.

The Gauntlet: When you come to LA, I’ll be there dangling a joint over the stage.

Jared: There is always a proverbial joint isn’t there?
